Farmers Protest Over Milk Price Outside EU Council Building


Hundreds of farmers are protesting in Brussels where European Union Agriculture is meeting to discuss low milk prices. EU decided to talk after weeks of protests all around Europe, when farmers were throwing milk stocks and preserving supplies of milk. Milk price have fallen sharply in Europe as supply went beyond demand.

There was amid police pressure as farmers protested outside the EU Council Building. The only decision made at the meeting was to create a panel of experts to look at the daily sector. France and Germany wanted EU to give farmers emergency funds. Ministers from 20 out of 27 EU member state issued a joint statement demanding the EU commission to come up with funds to relieve farmer’s immediate needs. Mariann Fischer Boel EU farm Commissioner said additional funds could be provided only if member states provided it and money does not come from existing EU budget. As a part of protest, many farmers rang cowbell, while some poured milk on the concrete street, threw eggs while few brought their dairy cows along with them. Farmers said their current production costs are more than twice the price they get from the milk.  Mr. Fitzpatrick said they wanted to see a viable and competitive dairy sector in Europe and believed the best way to achieve is through restructuring and modernizing and not by maintaining of quota.
