Conservationists Using Various Tactics To Safeguard Elephants

Conservationists Using Various Tactics To Safeguard Elephants

Conservationists in Cambodia have made an agreement, which should see elephants living more peacefully along with human neighbors. Villagers living near elephant’s territory have promised they will not harm animals or disturb their surroundings. In return, local farmers are receiving help from officials to keep the elephants away from their crop and farm.

Whenever animals live close to human environment there are human-elephant conflict as villagers develop and expand their land elephants lose their surroundings. So it becomes more likely for animals to wander into fields destroying crops and rarely attacking humans and livestock. This situation held to danger for many wild elephants in few countries. Conservationists are keen to prevent elephant and they are experimenting in Cambodia. Elephant’s number is to arise after decades of war and deforestation. Organization Fauna and Flora International is trying to maintain peace between people and pachyderms. This will help villagers to develop their funding through small business like chicken farming as an alterative of clearing forests. Organizations also advice villagers various tactics to keep elephant away from field. Matt Maltby  FFI’s elephant protection scheme has advised to grow different types of crops one line of defense such as chili fences around the boundaries of fields. Elephant does not like chilies so naturally they will turn other way. If that does not work then to deploy solar- powered electric fences however, the shock will not harm elephant.

Nokia profits for the April to June quarter have been only 380 million € as compared to 1.1 billion € for the same quarter a year ago. Nokia’s top rival phone maker Sony Ericsson has also reported similar results for the same period and believe that thing won’t change for the remaining year. The company has reported losses of 213 million € for the same period and it’s marginally less then the previous quarter when it had a 293 million € loss. To help survive this difficult time the company has introduced cost reduction measures including plans for a layoff of 4000 employees.

Both Sony Ericsson and Nokia have not been able to penetrate the multimedia and internet segment of the market. They face a lot of competition from competitors like Apple, HTC and BlackBerry. Even the two companies have tried by introducing low cost phones in the segment but still have failed to increase there market share.

Iraq dual suicide bomb assaults consume 43 lives

Iraq dual suicide bomb assaults consume 43 lives

A well-orchestrated series of twin bomb explosions rocked the Tal Afar city located in Nineveh province in Northern Iraq on Thursday morning. The Nineveh Military Operations Command revealed the current death count standing at 43 with 65 injured.

The ghastly incident occurred within few days subsequent to the departure of the U.S. troops as they passed on security control to the local power on June 30. The Prime Minister, Nuri al-Maliki has cautioned just the month before on the possible augment of terror attacks in a bid to trample down the mass buoyant self-reliance in the nation’s security strength that ensued after the exit of the U.S battle troops.

The attackers gave conclusion to their heinous intentions within minute’s proximity at around 7:30a.m.local time according to police officials. The first bomber had donned a police uniform, blasting himself to tatters close to the residence of a police official and his brother who were involved in counteracting terrorism. The entire kin of the police sergeant lost their lives while his brother was critically injured in the incident. As several onlookers thronged the blast site to offer assistance, a second blast ensued.

There were violent outbreaks in Nineveh province on Wednesday where Shiites were the sole targets. A car bomb blew up on Wednesday in Mosul, the provincial capital of Nineveh that exhumed 19 lives and injured many others. On Thursday morning, a bomb set off in the bustling market area of Sadr City in Baghdad, a pre-dominantly Shiite shanty taking the lives of seven while wounding 20 others.

Bombs slyly planted in a bicycle and car in a Shiite majority locality located in south-west Baghdad injured six persons. In the Karrada district in Baghdad, a road bomb intended to attack the convoy belonging to the Central Bank governor, narrowly missed him, while killing one onlooker and injuring five others.

G8 disappoints yet again

G8 disappoints yet again

The meet at Italy’s L’AQUILA by the G8 nations besides the Major Economies Forum having 17 members, who account for nearly 80 % of global emissions, has failed to set a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to half by the year 2050. A reference in the draft document to limit the world temperature rise to 2 degree Celsius or 3.6 degree Fahrenheit above pre-industrial levels would have forced deep cuts in worldwide emissions.

Alden Meyer of the Union of Concerned Scientists said “They are running out of time towards Copenhagen” as over 190 countries are to agree on a United Nations climate pact in Copenhagen, Denmark.

He also said “It’s a progress to set a goal based on science, but a missed opportunity if they don’t set clear 2050 and 2020 targets about how to reach that goal.”

Tobias Muenchmeyer of environmental group Greenpeace said “If this is now the result of the G8 talks, that would be really shocking,” G8 nations need to set tough 2020 goals for themselves and promise finance for developing states.

The G8 summit was thought by many as a chance to break the deadlock over curbing greenhouse gases in what could be a blueprint for the United Nations treaty. But on Tuesday, India & China blocked the call by G8 to sign a goal of halving world greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. An overnight text omits any reference to that target.

Kim Carstensen, head of the global climate initiative of the WWF International environmental group said “It is disappointing that they haven’t come further”.

Even the last hopes of making this forum move forward were lost after the departure of Chinese Head of State Hu Jintao, who had to return to Beijing due to unrest in North West region of China where 156 people have been killed.

The developing nations have said that the G8 countries must first set new goals for themselves which are to be far steeper and net to be met by 2020 and agree billions of dollars in funds to help the world move to renewable energy and cope with frequent droughts, floods, heat waves and rising sea levels. Refusing to set a 2050 goal the developing nations may want to keep back a bargaining chip before Copenhagen.

The G8 has promised to cut emissions that total about 10-14 percent below 1990 levels falling short of “at least 40 %” as demanded by the developing world. A U.N. panel of scientists has also outlined cuts of 25-40 % below 1990 levels by 2020 to avoid the worst of global warming by developed nations, with the developing world making a “significant deviation” below the projected rise in emissions.

These cuts by 2020 are consistent with the 2C goal. Carstensen said “If they take that 2 Celsius goal seriously, developed countries will have to deliver much more ambitious mid-term targets, and developing nations will have to start to act more”.

Globally affluent on the radar for new fangled carbon cut method

Globally affluent on the radar for new fangled carbon cut method

A novel means to allot accountability for carbon emission is said to resolve the standoff between countries that are budding and the developed ones. The mode places nationwide goals for curbing carbon emissions on the basis of the theory that states that the figure of high bracket income earners in a country is directly proportional to the rate of CO2 emission.

Research scholars from Princeton Environmental Institute commenced work on the module two years back with their prime goal being to uncover a steadfast means to assess the typical emission rate of high wage earners. It was concluded from nationwide statistics bureaus and World Bank that with every ten percent hike in income, the corresponding rise in emissions by that particular person went up by nearly close to ten percent.

Countries like Japan are twofold competent in this aspect in comparison to the US. Progressive countries have always received flack in complying with cutting carbon emissions without any concrete assurance from developing countries in this regard. The developed nations are of the viewpoint that developing countries should also take charge of the situation concerned, given the fact that they mass-generate them in the initial instance.

On the 1990 plane by 2020, currently developed countries like Scotland have laid down a determined deduction goal of 42 percent in carbon emissions surpassing many countries, while UK has consented to un-joint reduction of 34 percent and the European Union has allocated a cut of 20 percent evaluated to that same year itself.

The novel method plans to assign reduction on a descending range with reference to wealth as the base. With third world countries becoming slowly affluent, their contribution to carbon cuts will also rise eventually, when in due course they decide to reduce emissions, they would own the sources to be able to accomplish the said task. With the rapid growth rate of developing countries one can expect within the next two to three decades, they will produce significantly high rate of carbon emissions.

China, in fact, doesn’t have alarming high carbon emissions that gives it a lax period of a decade or so, ensuing which it will need to take stringent measures. The state of affairs presumes that global action to curb carbon emissions will commence from the year 2010 which by the year 2030 will have the same carbon emissions as the current scenario.

Countries like Russia, U.S, Canada, Australia, and Middle East need to put in considerable effort in curbing carbon emissions.

In December, as leaders from all nations congregate in Copenhagen to create an agreement that will substitute the Kyoto agreement that nullifies in 2012, how far the impact of the plan charted in the Princeton documents will be followed is to be watched out for.

US, Russia consent to condense nuclear missiles

US, Russia consent to condense nuclear missiles

US President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev hit an introductory pact on Monday , that ensued after three hours of discussion held in Kremlin, to cut down their respective stash of nuclear missiles to as low as 1500, targeting the least echelon that any US –Russia arms pact has ever achieved. The endeavour also entrusts the new deal to reduce the respective nation’s long range projectiles for conveying nuclear bombs to be in the range of 500-1100.

The notable deal being Obama’s premier one in Russia, was signed between the two leaders during the Moscow summit as a means to direct envoys while the nations progress towards a substitute deal as the currently existing START arms control agreement nullifies in December. The present agreement permits an upper limit of 2,200 weapons and 1,600 launch platforms. According to a statement issued by the White House, the new-fangled agreement incorporates able corroboration measures to augment defence, whilst doubling up to offer logicality and constancy in tactical offensive power.

Conscious measures to bridge the gap between the two countries were evident by the deal in which Moscow would permit US to move weaponry across its soil and space to Afghanistan. This comes as a windfall as it would aid in saving precious US $ 133million annually by means of relinquishing of transit fees and decreased flight time.

Obama requires Russia’s aid in creating pressure on North Korea and Iran to forego their nuclear warhead aspirations and thus effectively dealing with global warming, terror campaigns and in reviving economy.
