Metallic structure at Mumbai Metro line caves in

A mishap at the construction site of Mumbai Metro Line occurred at close to 11:30p.m where a metallic structure disintegrated. According to police officials, the debacle took place at the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro Rail during the late hours of Monday night.

No fatalities have been reported in the episode that took place. The brawly winds accompanied with heavy rains that have continued since yesterday evening seem to have taken their toll on the metallic structure that had been erected to sustain the weight of the main concrete pillars of the Mumbai Metro Line finally gave way in the north-west Sakinaka suburb.

The Director of Mumbai Metro One, K. P. Maheshwari mentioned that the metallic structure that had caved in due to unruly winds was just a provisional gibbet that was constructed. The resultant wreckage had been effectively cleared in just two to three hours. He also stated that work has commenced once again at the site.

Mr. Maheshwari has stated that an in-depth inquiry to find out the reason for this mishap would be carried and a report of which will be ready.

The metro disaster is the second of its kind after Delhi has a construction over-bridge collapse just two days ago.

Overwhelming rains engulf Mumbai

Overwhelming rains engulf Mumbai

The rain gods seem to have opened their flood gates, as Mumbai has been facing heavy downpour along with brawly winds since the previous evening that had caused traffic jams at many places.

Mithi River crosses the danger mark at 2.7 metres, which had caused the Mumbai deluge on 26/11. The Andheri and Milan subway have been closed to traffic with the roads close to the airport been facing traffic snarls. Flood alert seems most probable with the next high tide scheduled at 4:15p.m. Low lying areas have been inundated. Significant apprehensions have surfaced with the possible situation of heavy rains coinciding with high tide that might cause further aggravation.

The heart line of Mumbai, the Railways has two of the three lines running late by half an hour, though still operational as the harbour line has been cancelled indefinitely. There has been constant incessant rainfall in the suburbs and island city. Traffic logging on the north bound routes while south bound routes are relatively clear. Suburbs of Kurla, Kalina and Vile Parle close to the Mithi river continue to remain water logged. In Currey road, the traffic snarl is quite high.

Big concern about flooding as several parts of Bombay Juhu, khar, Bandra, dadar, Parel, Sion, Hindmata, Sewri, Wadala, Parel are significantly inundated. Mumbai has had an exponential growth rate coupled with its typical topology and surfeit construction with the only route out is the river.

The Disaster control mechanism is in place with the main concern of Government officials and those in Mumbai’s Disaster Management Cell would be contemplating possible evacuation of people from the low lying areas close to Mithi River. Airport visibility is a mere 800feet, with many flights getting delayed.
