Khamenei orders dismissal of vice-president Mashaie

Following the orders of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei , President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran discharged his senior most vice-president Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie. This decision was taken as Mr Mashaie had angered hardliners and Islamic clerics when he said that Iranians and Israelis were friends. There was week long standoff between Khamenei and Ahmadinejad as the president tried to defend his subordinate. In a note Khamenei expressed his discontent wit the vice-president saying that the appointment of Mr Mashaie was against government interests.

It all started a year ago when Mr Mashaie was the tourism minister. He had quoted that Iranians were friends with the Israeli people, in spite of the conflict between the governments of the two countries.

There were mass protests by hardline students in the Iranian capital demanding the dismissal of the Mr Mashaie. They came out in support of the supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei. The students also gave a strong warning of support withdrawal if the president did not dismiss Mr Mashaie. Protesting against the vice president they chanted in support of the supreme leader.

This is a clear sign that Ayatollah Khamenei is the supreme leader and he is the one who has the final say in all state matters. Post Islamic revolution the parliament has lost all its powers and the final authority in the Islamic Republic of Iran is still Ayatollah Khamenei.

Natalya Estemirova, a resident of Grozny, was amongst the key Caucasus-based activists working for Memorial, a prominent Russian rights group that has garnered global approbation for its able efforts of bringing to light rights misuses and detailed facts of warped Russian history. Natalya was brave to live and work in the rife-torn Chechnya. Her slain remains were recovered on Wednesday just hours following her forced seizure by four unidentified men near her residence in the wee hours of morning as she was heard screaming for help saying that she was being taken hostage.

Her cadaver riddled with close range bullet wounds on the head and the chest region was discovered near a highway in Ingushetia that borders Chechnya. Her killing was the most recent in a string of massacres of many human right supporters and journalists in Russia, following the much hyped shooting of reporter Anna Politkovskaya in 2006.

Natalya’s violent end ensues just hours post human rights groups submitting a comprehensive report stating that Vladimir Putin along with other officers must be put on trial in an international court for the misdoings committed at the time of the two wars that debilitated Chechnya.

The Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev has condemned the murder, asking for a top-level investigation into the heinous crime. Natalya’s work was a major source of discontent among Chechen authorities. She had incensed Chechen authorities by blaming security personnel for engaging in capricious slaughter of a suspected rebel on 7th July.

Argentina in red zone as swine flu fatalities escalate

Argentina in red zone as swine flu fatalities escalate

With the Health Minister, Juan Manzur confirming the death toll from the A(H1N1) virus mounting to a humongous 86,the official estimate and constantly rising. There have been close to 2, 677 confirmed swine flu cases so far. The provincial health minister, Claudio Zin has suggested reducing one-on-one contact especially in mass crowds and gatherings to avoid matters escalating out of hand.

Argentina is the only country in the southern hemisphere to be severely bolted by the severity of the deadly virus with a relatively high rate of morbidity. Argentina now stands third in row for swine flu mortalities after US and Mexico where the pandemic first made its presence felt and has lately outdone even Canada.

As the epidemic spreads its deadly roots during the winter season, many Argentines preferred to remain homebound, several churches in Bolivia including the Bolivian Roman Catholic Church called off weekday masses. Churches in East Santa Cruz city, the hot bed for the virus, having greater than two-thirds of the country’s reported swine flu cases had the bishopric propose that adulators steer clear of the church and rather listen to the mass on television or radio.

Commercial institutions comprising banks, trade quarters, courts, stock exchange were closed for a day all over Argentina. This coalesced with the Independence Day holiday on Thursday, summing up to a four-day holiday weekend wherein most preferred not to venture into crowds or meet up outsiders.

The President, Cristina Fernandez announced a day’s leave to federal public workers with many government organisations followed the day off, along with the densely populated Buenos Aires province. The government has increased the winter vacations twofold to make it one month in case of schools. Expecting women and several susceptible employees have been given leave for 15 days.

Many cinemas have been closed, public occasions have been put on hold and restaurants have devised the policy to maintain a 3-yard distance in between tables.
